In this post we showcase three of the most unique and secure off-site record storage facilities and data centers in the world. All of these facilities feature state-of-the-art defense systems and located either underground or within a mountain. These underground fortresses have strong appeal for clients looking for ultra-secure storage and hosting that will survive any type of disaster, including a nuclear blast.
The most secure off-site data storage facilities
SmartBunker
Located in a former NATO command bunker in Lincolnshire, U.K., SmartBunker is a 30,000 square-foot maximum security data center providing managed hosting services. It’s the first U.K. data center with zero carbon emissions and generates all power from wind energy.
Why is this facility unique?
It provides increased corporate accountability with reduced environmental impact.
In 2008, the U.K. experienced a 5.3 earthquake, one of largest to date. The tremors hit SmartBunker which is located only 30 miles from the epicenter of the quake. Officials said SmartBunker was unaffected by the quake and maintained normal operations.
Bahnhof Pionen
This modern maximum security data center south of Stockholm, Sweden is located in a former military bunker from the Cold War. The facility is located 100 feet below the ground. The facility is equipped with a blast proof 40-centimeter thick steel door, redundant diesel generators and a state-of-the-art smoke and gas detection system.
Why is this facility unique?
Home of WikiLeaks, Bahnhof describes themselves as a free speech network operator and “does not respond to any demands from authorities in other countries for information about clients, logs or data or anything else.”
Modern sci-fi design complete with waterfalls, plants and a glass-walled conference room overlooking the data-center racks.
Perpetual Storage
This is a maximum security disaster recovery, backup data center and off-site data storage facility located inside a solid granite mountain near Salt Lake City, Utah. The facility is complete with a nuclear blast-proof door weighing more than six tons, a man trap, armed security guards and utilizes the latest in technology and procedures to protect the vault and information stored therein. Because Perpetual Storage chooses to not store paper and has a state-of-the-art fire suppression system, they have received a fire department certification as a completely fire resistant facility.
This facility is located just up the canyon from the genealogical vaults owned and operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Why is this facility unique?
The vault was purpose-built for digital storage and to exceed U.S. Department of Defense standards for classified and vital records, unlike many facilities placed in former mines that are susceptible to floods, collapses and fires.
It’s located 250 feet inside a monolithic laccolith, a rare formation of solid granite rock that protects the facility from earthquakes and man-made attacks.
The facility is above the flood plain and earthquake proof, therefore safe from natural disasters.
The facility is outside of any aviation flight path.
