Offline Storage is Imperative for Today’s Data Protection!

Offline Storage is more important now than ever!

Over 59% of organizations have experienced a ransomware attack within the past year. The average cost per organization is now over 2 million dollars. These attacks have become more sophisticated, and with the addition of AI, attacks are also becoming more effective.

The use of ransomware is not new, but the advanced techniques being used today are. Ransomware attacks have risen 18% over the last year and have been forecasted to continue to rise.
Below are the new industry standards and the steps you can follow to prevent future cyber-attacks in your organization.

Most organizations are very familiar with the “3-2-1 rule”, which has been the gold standard in protecting your data from cyberattacks in the past.

• 3 copies of your data
• 2 different types of data – Tape, disk, cloud storage or solid-state drives
• 1 copy held offsite and completely offline

Today, the recommendation to secure your data is the 3-2-1-0 rule.

Organizations should now hold 3 data copies in addition to the original data. It is imperative that the original backup has zero errors, making sure the data restores properly.

Tape technology is the standard offline backup method for organizations. It is ideal for air-gapped strategies because backup data is stored on tape cartridges that are then stored physically either in a tape library or offsite vaulting service. This creates a physical air gap between the data and the network. Using this method, you can ensure that attackers do not have access to the data.

Offsite storage, for at least one copy of your data, guarantees a true airgap and protection against breaches. Other benefits of offsite storage provide safety from natural disasters, network failures, internal bad actors, and/or hardware failures. Following these recommendations will ensure that your business can operate with little or no disruption.

Perpetual Storage, Inc. can help you achieve a true airgap for your organization’s data. Our products include physical storage, Granite Cloud (online services) and our Isolated Data Tier (IDT) product. All our services can help protect your business against ransomware and cyberattacks.
