A cost-effective solution to enterprise storage

Perpetual Storage works with hundreds of enterprise-level organizations that use various methods of storing their data to find a secure and cost effective solution to enterprise storage needs.

What we have found is that a tiered data storage solution is the best way to make sure the right data is stored in the right place for the best price point using a hierarchical data management strategy.

This allows large organizations to utilize as many or as few data storage methods as they deem necessary in order to manage their specific needs.

Tiered storage

  •  Tier 0: Ultra high performance applications. This tier could include financial transactions and e-commerce applications (IOPS/$).
  •  Tier 1: Mission critical revenue generating data and high performance applications. This tier could include business processing and data analysis/mining (balance of IOPS & GB).
  •  Tier 2: Backup/disaster recovery applications. Reference, vital and sensitive data. This tier could include email as well as file and print. Capacity could be optimized ($/TB).
  •  Tier 3: Fixed content. Compliance, archival and long-term retention data. Green storage applications.

Each organization has different needs so the CIO would discern how much data is in each tier based on the needs and best practices of the organization and that would also take into account the total cost of ownership. What we generally find is:

  •  Tier 0 would contain just 1 to 3 % of data and this is the data that is actively/instantly being used.
  •  Tier 1 would contain 12 to 20% of data and would be about 1 day old.
  •  Tier 2 would contain 20 to 25% of data and would be anywhere from two to seven days old.
  •  Tier 3 would contain more that 43 to 60% of data that is eight+ days old.

A CIO for an enterprise-level organization would have much more data to process and create designations for than a mid-level organization. Each decision could have major ramifications as far as cost and carbon footprint goes.

A major cost-saving solution is to put tier 3 data onto tape and store it off-site, since it won’t need to be accessed in the same way as the other tiers. Tape does not need to be constantly active so it saves organizations on energy costs and has a drastically reduced impact on the environment than disk/servers.

Perpetual Storage has the ability to provide off-site records storage as well as private cloud services, making it a great partner to have when deciding on your enterprise-level data storage strategy.
