Creating Your Tiered Storage Strategy

strategy

Implementing a tiered storage strategy for your organization can increase efficiency and reduce cost. When developing your tiered storage strategy, one must focus on the specific needs of the organization. Many organizations have different regulations and directives controlling data lifecycle management practices. Here are some factors you will need to keep in mind while deve

loping your own tiered storage strategy:

  1. Goals and Priorities

What are your goals and priorities? Improve performance? Reduce costs? Increase data access speeds?

  1. Determine RPO and RTO

RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the amount of data at risk between data protection events. It reflects the amount of data that could potentially be lost during a disaster recovery. RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the point in time when all data must be restored to resume processing

  1. Evaluate and Categorize Data

Determine the various types of data and understand how your organization uses it. Categorize data by type, value, retention schedules, access speeds, frequency of use, etc. Take an inventory of the applications in use to better understand your storage requirements.

  1. Align Data with Storage Tiers

Determine the number of Tiers and align data with the appropriate tier and media.

Tier 0: High performance; Not all organizations require this tier
         Flash Media
Tier 1: Primary Storage; active business information
         Disk
Tier 2: Secondary storage – back-up; inactive data
         Cloud, Disk, Tape
Tier 3: Long term storage – archive;disaster recovery
         Tape
  1. Implementation
Now that you have your tiers determined, you need to create an implementation plan. What is your budget? How will systems integrate (create a workflow)? What staff or outside resources are required? What is the timeline? What data, if any, will be off-line during the transition and is it crucial?
