What to Expect & Not Expect with LTFS & LTO Tapes

lto-tape-expectations

By now you should be familiar with how LTO tapes and LTFS work together. You should also know the benefits and understand that LTO tapes are not dead and will not die for a long time. If, however, you haven’t been able to keep up with LTFS I will provide a quick recap below.

What is LTFS?

The Linear Tape File System works with generation 5 LTO tape and later and allows users to access data more quickly through a “Microsoft Windows like environment” with drag and drop functionality. Read More

Benefits of LTFS

Once you open up the LTFS interface you can quickly see a list of saved files and restore them just by clicking button. Read More

LTO Tape is NOT Dead

LTO tape manufacturers have released the roadmap for new LTO generations leading up to generation ten. Read More

With LTFS you can expect to have your data more accessible and readily available at a moment’s notice. Your department will save time and money which will allow them to spend more energy where it can be used to increase production. Data can be shared across multiple platforms which are using LTFS allowing multiple tasks to be completed by multiple departments.

LTFS will not work with LTO tapes or earlier than generation 5. This system is not a solution for active backup and will not provide the same performance as flash memory. LTFS works best when using LTO tapes for archival storage for video, images, scanned documents, and other data that needs to be retained for long periods of time.

LTO tapes are a long lasting, inexpensive backup solution and LTFS allows your costs to remain low. Ease of use and a small learning curve allows the LTFS to be easily incorporated with any existing LTO5 or LTO6 tape library. Finally your department will thank you for creating more opportunity for production and less time spent searching for files.
